Bentonite Cat Litter — What It Is & Why It Works

The most popular cat litter type in the world — and for good reason. Here's everything you need to know about bentonite cat litter.

What is bentonite?

Bentonite is a natural clay mineral derived from volcanic ash. It has been used in cat litter since the 1950s because of one unique property: it expands up to 15x its volume when it absorbs liquid.

This expansion creates tight, scoopable clumps that make litter box maintenance easy and hygienic. Bentonite cat litter doesn't just absorb — it traps.

Sanking uses a premium Carbon Fine grade of bentonite — ultra-fine particles for better coverage, faster clumping (3 seconds), and superior comfort for your cat's paws.

Which bentonite is right for you?

Both types use bentonite clay, but they behave very differently in the litter box.

Clumping Bentonite (Recommended)

Forms solid clumps when it contacts liquid. You scoop out just the clump — leaving clean litter behind. Uses sodium bentonite which has higher swelling capacity.

  • Easy daily scooping
  • Less litter waste
  • Better odor control
  • Lower cost per use
  • Preferred by most cats

Non-Clumping Bentonite

Absorbs liquid without forming clumps. Entire litter box must be changed more frequently. Uses calcium bentonite which has lower swelling capacity.

  • No scooping needed
  • Softer texture
  • Often less dusty
  • Higher overall cost
  • Full box changes required

Why activated carbon changes everything

Most bentonite cat litters control odor by absorption alone. Sanking goes further — activated carbon neutralizes at the molecular level.

Molecular odor trapping

Activated carbon has millions of microscopic pores that trap odor molecules (ammonia, sulfur compounds) — not just absorb them. The smell is physically captured, not masked.

3-second clumping

Sanking's Carbon Fine formula clumps in just 3 seconds. The ultra-fine particle size means more surface area contact — faster and firmer clumps than coarser brands.

99% dust-free

Fine bentonite can be dusty. Sanking's processing eliminates 99% of dust particles — better for your cat's respiratory health and cleaner for your home.

How to use bentonite cat litter

1⃣

Fill 3–4 inches deep

Pour bentonite to 3–4 inches depth. This gives clumps room to form without touching the bottom.

2⃣

Scoop daily

Remove clumps once or twice daily. This keeps odor minimal and makes the litter last longer.

3⃣

Top up as needed

Add fresh litter to maintain the 3-inch depth as you scoop out clumps.

4⃣

Full change monthly

Do a full litter box change every 2–4 weeks. Wash the box with mild soap and dry fully before refilling.
